The 4th of July is almost here. It is a great time to enjoy our family and friends during this National Holiday. Whether we do this at home in our backyard or somewhere on a beach, it is important to practice safety so that our fun does not turn into a disaster.
Being somewhere already when the 4th of July begins is helpful. The 4th of July has been ruled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as one of the deadliest holidays to be on the road. According to the NHTSA 51% of the traffic crashes on the 4th is due to drunk driving.
Here are some additional dangers to be aware of on the 4th of July.
- Sunburns. These are a common problem throughout the summer. Experts will tell you that applying sunscreen just once is not enough. You should reapply every one and a half hour to two hours. Be sure and use broad spectrum sunscreen for UVA and UVB protection.
- Food Poisoning. With all the commotion going on during the 4th, passing dishes and being distracted leaves a lot of room for food poisoning. Pleas avoid using the same utensil used on the raw burger meat on salads, etc. Two important tips, keep all utensils separated and keep your eye on how ling food is sitting around.
- Fireworks. You should insure that all fireworks are supervised by an adult that is sober and rationale. Even Sparklers need to be supervised. They can reach up to 2000 degrees (Fahaenheit).
- Drowning. These are a huge issue in the Summer. We often see drownings at family gatherings. With all the fun and food going on it is easy to become distracyed and lose sight of a child that has wandered into the water unsupervised. You should always have at least on adult monitoring the pool or beach area at all times during family gatherings.
- Foot Injuries. At picnic and family gatherings kids often want to kick off their shoes and run barefooted while playing. This is not a good b practice because they could step on glass, a rock or something else sharp hidden in the grass.
