At Action Heating and Air Conditioning we know how important it is to have your heater working on that first cold day when temperatures are in the 30s or below and your heater won’t come on. Proper maintenance can insure your HVAC system is working properly and efficiently when you need it the most. We thought we would share these troubleshooting tips with you when your heater won’t start.
- Check Your Thermostat
Make sure the switch is turned to heating and you must set the thermostat above the current room temperature to insure the heater comes on.
- Make sure you have fuel
If your furnace is gas, you need to make sure the gas valve is fully opened. If you use another source like propane be sure the line is turned on and there is fuel in the tank.
- Check the power supply
You could have a tripped breaker or a blown fuse in your main electrical panel that could stop your furnace from igniting.
- Let the motor cool
It is possible your heater motor is overloaded. Keep it off for about 30 minutes and then press the restart button.
- Consider the ignitor
If you have a furnace with a hot surface ignitor, look for a blinking indicator light, which could mean the ignitor is in lockout mode. Reset it by turning the power switch off then on. If the heater still won’t ignite, the ignitor may be damaged and require replacement. An intermittent pilot system that fails to ignite could have a loose component, damaged spark electrode or a problem with the control module.
- Something blocking the ignitor
It is possible that a dead animal such as a lizard or gecko has died in your ignitor area causing the connection to not be made properly when you turn on the system. In this case it is best to have a HVAC professional check out your problem.
