The long, hot days of summer can bring dangerously high temperatures. The following are tips The American Red Cross to help you stay safe.
- Hot Cars can be deadly never leave children or pets in your vehicle. The inside temperature of the car can quickly reach 120 degrees.
- Always stay hydrated, drink plenty of water and natural juices, even if you are not thirty. Avoid too much caffeine and alcoholic drinks
- Avoid extreme temperature changes.
- Postpone outdoor games and activities when temperatures are extreme.
- Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing. Try to avoid wearing dark colors that absorb the sun’s rays.
- Work out with a buddy when you are exercising or working outdoors. Also take frequent breaks when exercising or working outside.
- Check on older family members that may or may not have an air conditioner to insure they are doing well when extreme temperatures occur
- Make sure your pets are not suffering from the heat. Be sure they have plenty of water at all times.
- If someone you know does not have air conditioning, they should chooses places to go to for relief from the heat during the warmest part of the day, like theaters, shopping malls, or libraries.
Here are 4 common heat related concerns that are common, you should be aware of their symptoms and what first aid treatments should be utilized. They are:
Sunburn Heat Cramps Heat Exhaustion Heat Stroke (Sun Stroke)
HEAT STROKE LIFE-THREATENING. Signs include hot, red skin which may be dry or moist; changes in consciousness; vomiting and high body temperature. Call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number immediately if someone shows signs of heat stroke. Move the person to a cooler place. Quickly cool the person’s body by immersing them up to their neck in cold water if possible. Otherwise, douse or spray the person with cold water, or cover the person with cold, wet towels or bags of ice.
