Sudden Loss of Heat

The first thing to do is check your power source for an outage or surge issue. It you have not lost power, next check your fuse box to see if you have a blown fuse.

A malfunctioning pilot light or ignition system may also be the issue. If this is the case, you need the help of a professional. This is not something an amateur should try and fix.

Inconsistent Room Temperature

If your house is cold despite your furnace running, there could be a draft that could be causing this problem.

Leaking windows, drafty doors, and poor or damaged insulation are major heat losses.

It may help to have an audit conducted by your utility company if available.

There could also be an unbalanced air flow problem. This may simply be corrected by adjusting your vents. But most of the time this is the problem because your coils or filters are dirty.

You should schedule routine air filter inspection with your HVAC professional. They can also provide routine vacuuming of your registers and returns.

Cycling Heat

A clogged, dirty filter or blower can cause inadequate air flow. This may cause your furnace to click on and off frequently at it shuts off after heating up too quickly.

A faulty thermostat can also cause this issue. If you do not know your furnace components, have home heating experts inspect your furnace and resolve the issue of unwanted heat cycling.

Carbon Monoxide

This is a major risk to a homeowner. It is odorless, colorless, and tasteless.

If you have a gas furnace over 10 years old, there is a higher risk of having a rusted heat exchanger. Tiny cracks in the heat exchange can leak carbon monoxide. It would be advisable to install a carbon monoxide detector for you and your family’s safety.

You should have a HVAC professional inspect your furnace for potential carbon monoxide leaks.
