Daphne AL Air Conditioning Repair & Service
Southern Alabama bulges past the natural divide of Mobile Bay to stretch its way into the Gulf of Mexico. Busy Mobile fans out on the west side of the bay, while Daphne lays claim to the quieter east side. Daphne’s population is around 25,000 and growing. The city may be small, but residents know there’s something special about the location: It’s one of the only places in the world to experience a “jubilee.” This naturally occurring phenomenon brings crabs and fish close to shore, where delighted locals easily scoop them out of the water. On these summer nights, shouts of jubilee ring out across the Daphne shoreline.
History of Daphne
Spanish explorer Hernando Desoto journeyed through what would become Baldwin County in 1540, and the region was home to several American Indian tribes. The village of Daphne was settled by the 1760s. Baldwin County was actually organized about 10 years before the state of Alabama entered the union, in 1819. Daphne was named the county seat in 1868, but in 1900, Bay Minette successfully lobbied to become the seat. Daphne’s leadership resisted, so a faction from the rival town is said to have set up a fake murder to distract the sheriff while the men stole the records from the courthouse.
Daphne Events
Residents enjoy a handful of annual events, including a Christmas parade and Independence Day celebration. Every spring, Christ the King Catholic Church sponsors Festa Italiana to honor a group of Italian families who settled the area. In the fall, attention turns to the Jubilee Festival, held yearly since 1988. The event, in Old Towne Daphne, includes a juried art show, kids art, local entertainment, a food court, arts and crafts vendors, and more.
Things to Do in Daphne
History has a home in Old Methodist Church Museum, which is on the National Register of Historical Places. The church was built in 1858, and the museum was started in 2001. Exhibits are open limited hours, mainly on the weekends. The building is at 405 Dryer Ave in Daphne.
The American Sport Art Museum Archives gives a different take on the shared athletic experience of U.S. culture, viewed through an artistic lens. The museum’s collection includes more than 1,500 paintings, sculptures, posters and other works. The museum is housed on the Daphne campus of the United States Sports Academy and is open to the public during the week. There is no admission charge.
The theme at Village Point Park Preserve is “treasure.” Though pirates were known to roam the bay, the preserve is focused on the area’s natural wildlife and scenic treasures, as well as the historical items that are periodically unearthed. The park is Daphne’s largest, and it includes one of the state’s largest live oaks. The tree is named for Andrew Jackson, who is said to have climbed it to make a speech during the War of 1812.
